Does having unnecessary files on your web server reduce the speed of your web site?

If I have unnecessary files on my web server that are not linked to by my web sites’ markup, will it affect its speed?

    For backup of many files being served will affect the speed.
    The speed.

    They won’t affect your web servers speed at all. They will however take from your quota of available disk space.
